Hong Kong part II

Well what else do you do while you’re waiting for a flight but update your blog!
We had a fantastic day today thanks to the Supreme Project Manager (that’s Ed by the way!) We checked out of the hotel this morning and caught the bus to the hotel where we left our luggage in left luggage for the day. Then we got another couple of trains (they are great in HK -very fast, smooth, clean and on time) to an island near the airport to get a cable car up to the top of a mountain. The cable car trip took 25 minutes and took us to the biggest, seated, outdoor, bronze Buddha in the world! It faces Bejing and ‘blesses’ the whole of China. It was big! We had an authentic Chinese meal where I managed to populate the tablecloth with plenty of rice (good job they didn’t serve red wine too!) and the waiter finally offered me a knife and fork. How embarrassing but very typical :D Then a look around a Buddhist monastry and cable car back and on to the airport etc……
We have really enjoyed Hong Kong. The people are fantastic and can’t do enough for you. Yesterday, we were just trying to figure out how to get out a rail station with our particular tickets when a lady stopped to ask if she could help us!
Right that really is it now until we get home……………..off for a vin rouge :D :D

Hong Kong again

Drive to Melbourne airport, drop off car, Virgin Blue to Sydney, a few hours in the Air NZ lounge and Virgin to HK! Phew – it was a long day.
We caught various trains yesterday to get into Hong King city to explore. The shops were amazing (if you’re into that sort of thing – I’m not a shopper) with some very expensive jewellery etc……………. We wandered around street markets, looking at strange fish, Chinese lanterns and toilet brushes! You can buy anything in HK within yards of each other!
We then caught the tram up to the Peak. This is the world’s steepest funicular railway up to Victoria Peak above the city. The tram was impossibly steep at times but the views were fantastic – although I think some of the buildings below were catching up in height these days. I can vaguely remember going up The Peak when I was 13 and I think it’s changed enormously. There is now a massive tower building at the top, housing a shopping mall on about 5 floors, various overpriced restaurants and a games arcade. Opposite is another shopping mall and more food places including MacDonalds and Burger King :( !!! It’s shame it’s been ruined as the tram and the views should be enough entertainment for anyone – God, I sound middle-aged!
Afterwards we went and got some dinner, before catching the Star ferry to Kowloon where we could have had several pairs of trousers made up within seconds on getting off the ferry! We wandered over to the Peninusular Hotel thinking we might get a cocktail but decided it was too posh and probably too expensive for us peasants! The highlight of the day though was the night time cityscape of Hong Kong from Kowloon. It was stunning and made even more special with a light and laser show to music at 8.00pm! All the buildings lights were synchonized to ‘dance’ to music. It was pretty impressive and a great way to finish the evening :D
Today we are going to drop our luggage off at the airport and catch a train to the Po Lin Monastry and Giant Buddha before getting some tucker and flying home :(
See you in a few days when I will be embarking on a diet (to lose the paunch!) and strict excercise (not run since the race last Sunday) regime……………
